Palermo is warmed by the sun on the day that Bruno Costa meets Anna Zanchi and falls madly in love with her. Bruno works as a technician for the telephone company, but he is a bit different from his fellow workers: he enjoys books, music and films; he has his own private, highly creative world. Anna, a translator who has settled in Palermo, opens the door to let him in. He looks at her and, even before her telephone line has been repaired, the chemistry is at work between the two. They spend two marvelous days getting to know each other, trying to find a name for what has happened to them. They are eating dinner in a restaurant. A waiter makes his way among the tables for the third time, holding the cell phone reserved for calls to customers. He is looking for Mr. Bruno Zanchi. Bruno takes the telephone, in part as a joke and in part on account of the funny coincidence of that stranger whose name is a combination of Brunos first name and Annas last. When Bruno leaves the next morning, Anna is still asleep. He knows he will see her later, to go out to lunch. But while Bruno is away, a man dressed in grey enters the building and talks his way into Annas apartment. After questioning her to find out where Bruno has gone, he kills her in brutal fashion. Brunos nightmare begins. When he returns to Annas home, he finds the body of the woman whom he already considered his companion. Bruno sets off on a ferocious hunt for the guilty parties. He winds up arriving at the answer before the police, while engaging in a subtle psychological duel with a mafia boss. Bruno wants Annas killer. He wants to kill him the way the killer did away with his woman. But when the moment of reckoning arrives, Bruno, realizing he is not a killer, turns the guilty parties over to the authorities.
