Synopsis

In 1842 Braulio Fernandez, an old man, narrates some of the events of his life. His memory goes back to the year when the war started. Right when he is about to be executed on the battlefield an officer offers to spare his and the other inmates’ lives, under the condition that they serve the Spanish crown. The war continues, and the tale moves to 1820, to the city of Caracas. Despite his years of service to the royal army, Braulio is seen with distrust by royal officers and brigadiers. Braulio meets a beautiful young lady, Lucia. The armistice reaches an end. Braulio decides to “turn” to serve the country. Braulio told his decision to Lucia and they said goodbye to each other. After a long march of continuous combat, Bermudez and his army enter Caracas triumphantly on May 14th. Braulio and Lucia find each other. However, the lovers’ reunion is short during this special time.
