Synopsis

Each day, seasoned Beijing police detective Zhang Huiling patrols the Shuangyushu neighbourhood of the Haidian District with a team of officers that specialise in catching pickpockets and fraudsters. They are kept busy by a menagerie of thieves, con artists and illegal hawkers who come from all over China to the district known for its migrant workers. And Zhang is a natural. During his decade on the job, he has developed an almost supernatural ability to spot criminals within the throngs of people passing through his district. Within a few days, he arrests a car thief who targets BMWs and Mercedes using hi-tech gadgets, an extended family who fake hit-and-run accidents and then blackmail drivers for on-the-spot compensation, a husband-and-wife team of currency counterfeiters, a con artist who dresses as a monk to fool his religious victims, and a retired master thief looking to reclaim his former glory on Zhang's turf. Bathed in a bottomless pit of pain and misery, there's no escape from the daily hardships that Zhang witnesses. With every crime, every arrest and every ounce of mercy he can muster, he fights the endless battle for his soul.
