Sappho is a provocative and passionate love story set in the 1920s. - Millionaire’s daughter Sappho Lovell arrives on the Greek island of Lesbos for her honeymoon with her artist husband Phil. There she meets Helene, the daughter of a Russian archaeologist, and she falls in love with her. As our three lovers live out a complex girl-boy-girl sexual triangle, Sappho also comes to believe that she is the reincarnation of the ancient poetess Sappho – that Sappho who first put the “lesbian” in Lesbos. However, our modern Sappho does not realize how the ancient Sappho’s legend ends… The English-language Sappho stars a trio of talented young actors, Avalon Barrie, Todd Soley and Lyudmila Shiryaeva, and also features local star Bogdan Stupka. The music is by Maro Theodorakis and world-famous Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis (Zorba the Greek, Serpico, Z), and the superb photography is by Baghir Rafiyev. The movie was produced by Artur Novikov, and written and directed by Robert Crombie. Sappho more then trebled the all-time box-office record for a locally-produced movie in Ukraine on its release in 2008. Sappho also attracted both critical praise and public scandal – local religious leaders organizing demonstrations and a 20,000 name nationwide petition calling for the movie to be banned for sympathizing with homosexuality, and branding the movie as “the worst expression of Western freedom”. Sappho has also been released to cinemas in Russia.
