1649. A world on the verge of modern times. Girolamo Fumagalli discovers that the last image seen by a dying person is imprinted on his eyeballs in the moment of death. Driven by his obsession the scientist starts to kill in order to reproduce their final image on paper and calls the macabre technique "Thanatography". 350 years later the same kind of gruesome ritual and abominable crimes recur within the walls of an international film school led by the mysterious Countess Orsini (Geraldine Chaplin).
