Synopsis

The grownups are acting like children and the kids have to grow up fast in “The Playroom” a family drama that captures the exhilaration and perversity of the freewheeling ‘70s.
John Hawkes (Golden Globe-nominee for “The Sessions,” Oscar-nominee for “Winter’s Bone,” and “Lincoln”) plays Martin Cantwell, a well-meaning father who has trouble asserting his authority over his emotionally detached wife, Donna. Donna (Molly Parker, “The Road,” and TV’s “Deadwood”) has decided the best way to deal with reality is by drinking her days away and flaunting her affair with their handsome neighbor…right in front of Martin.
The story unfolds through the eyes of the four Cantwell children, as they search for some stability in the face of their parents’ crumbling marriage. The eldest, Maggie (a stunning performance by newcomer, Olivia Harris) acts as big sister and surrogate mother to her three younger siblings.
During their parents’ nightly escapades downstairs, Maggie gathers her younger siblings in their attic hideaway, weaving strange tales of escape and adventure to mask the twisted intrigue unfolding just beneath their feet.
But at sixteen, Maggie is too old for bedtime stories--before the night is over she must confront the truth of who her parents really are, and make a choice that will impact their family forever.
