In one of the richest, most beautiful and livable cities in the world, Vancouver’s Downtown East Side is an anomaly -- a densely populated ghetto of the drug addicted, impoverished and disenfranchised. Though violence is a fact of life here – for over two decades another shadow hung over the Lower East Side as sex workers began disappearing at an alarming rate, with as many as 50 women reported missing between 1978 and 2001. But this number was only alarming to those who knew and loved them as daughters, sisters, wives and mothers. The missing were of virtually no interest to the police and government who denied there was any problem at all - women ignored because they were considered the detritus of society: native, crack addicted sex workers. Finally, in 2007 a local pig farmer named Willie Pickton was caught, tried and imprisoned for life for the murders of 6 women. While in prison he claimed he was responsible for the disappearance and murder of as many as 49 women. On The Farm is a cutting edge drama about a small army of people from all walks of life who exerted the pressure that led to the capture of one of history’s worst serial killers.Based on Stevie Cameron’s best-selling book by the same name it’s the tale of a drug addicted sex worker, whom with a the will to survive, fights Pickton and miraculously lives to talk about it; of a fervent social activist whose passion for her community makes her keep digging for answers; of a teenage girl who comes to search for her missing mother; and of a pair of good cops who despite contempt and intimidation, stay on the case.
