Laplace’s Witch is the live-action adaption of the mystery novel by Japanese celebrated author Keigo Higashino. Directed by prolific filmmaker Takashi Miike (13 Assassins), the film features an all-star ensemble cast including Sho Sakurai (The After Dinner Mysteries), Suzu Hirose (Our Little Sister), Sota Fukushi (As the Gods Will), Hiroshi Tamaki (Nodame Cantabile) and Etsushi Toyokawa (20th Century Boys). Two people are poisoned to death by hydrogen sulfide at hot springs located in different regions. The police ask Professor Shusuke Aoe (Sho Sakurai), who is a geochemist, to determine whether the deaths were caused by freak accidents or were murders. The police want to eliminate foul play, and Shusuke agrees that planning such a poisoning would be impossible without precise knowledge of all of the surrounding geological conditions. While investigating the cases, Shusuke Aoe comes across Madoka Uhara (Suzu Hirose). She guesses correctly that a natural phenomenon will take place. The police begin to suspect Madoka might be related to the deaths and a 3rd case takes place.
