In 1986, director John Woo changed the face of action cinema with A Better Tomorrow. Director Ding Sheng resurrects the spirit of this timeless, iconic classic with a brand-new chapter of the heroic bloodshed saga. Growing up by the sea, Zhou Kai is able to combine his intrepid nature and his knowledge of his surroundings into a successful smuggling operation. His partners include the loyal and trustworthy Mark, the insidious Rubber Band and the submissive Cang. Kai’s younger brother Zhou Chao has looked up to Kai all his life, but he also happens to be an up-and-coming star in the police department’s narcotics division. After setting up a new drug deal with the yakuza, Rubber Band devises a plan to push Kai out. The intentionally botched deal leads to Kai’s capture by the police and inadvertently the death of Kai’s father. Heartbroken and enraged by the consequences of his brother’s crimes, Chao disowns Kai. Meanwhile, Mark travels to Japan to kill Rubber Band and avenge his blood brother. However, the ensuing gunfight leaves Mark badly hurt and his left leg crippled. Rubber Band’s betrayal spells the end of the smuggling team, but the cowardly Cang somehow manages to use it as his way to climb up in the crime world. Three years later, Kai is released from prison and vows to start a new life for himself, but the unforgiving eyes of Chao and society at large stop him at every step. Cang, meanwhile, has become the new kingpin in town, loaded with power and money. Aiming to destroy Cang’s operation, Chao goes on a relentless investigation that puts him directly on a dangerous path in Cang’s wrath. To protect his brother from danger, Kai has no choice but to become a police’s mole and infiltrate Cang’s operation. This decision sends Kai and Mark towards an inevitable showdown against their former partner-in-crime…
