"Milarepa", a true story based on centuries-old oral traditions about the man who was to become Tibet's greatest yogi and spiritual warrior. A youthful Milarepa (Jamyang Lodro—lead in Khyentse Norbu’s The Cup) is propelled into a world of sorrow and betrayal after his father's sudden death. Destitute and hopeless, he sets out to learn black magic - and exact revenge on his enemies--encountering magicians, demons, an enigmatic teacher and unexpected mystical power along the way. But it is in confrontation with the consequences of his anger that he learns the most. Milarepa was born in 1052, the Year of the Water Dragon, in the shadow of Mount Tisi, in Tibet. Following his father's death Milarepa, his younger sister and mother (played by Tibetan singer/actress Kelsang Chukie Tethong) were robbed of their possessions and forced into servitude by a ruthless aunt and uncle. At his mother's urging, young Milarepa sets off on a journey to learn black magic so that he can avenge his family. Milarepa encounters the renowned sorcerer Yungton Trogyel (played by real-life lama and star of The Cup Orgyen Tobgyal) and proves to be an exceptional student of black magic. Once he acquires the magical powers he returns to his village and conjures a monstrous lightening and hail storm that kills most of his aunt and uncle’s family. He finds no pleasure in the vengeance and soon is overcome with great remorse. The remorse becomes the catalyst that propels Milarepa on his spiritual journey to find a teacher who can teach him how to purify his actions and guide him on a path towards realization. Lama and filmmaker Neten Chokling weaves a magical story of ancient Tibet that purposively parallels contemporary cycles of conflict and violence. The futility of vengeance is the bond that unites today’s audiences with this ancient saga about one of the world’s great seekers.
