Synopsis

A story about friendship, betrayal and forgiveness
Asta (18) and Ingrida (19), two best friends and newly gradu- ates promise to spend their last summer together before go- ing separate ways. And when Ingrida’s new boyfriend, Justas, offers the two girls a free trip to Copenhagen, a place to stay and work for the summer – it seems like a dream come true!
The car journey down Lithuania, Poland and up through the beautiful Denmark, turns out a true fairytale and Asta falls in love with Justas’ best friend, Michael.
But the romantic dream ends in Denmark when Michael in- forms Asta that Ingrida has run away - Asta suddenly finds herself held captive, forced to work off their debt. After sys- tematic beatings and rapes Asta is broken down and soon finds herself on the street as a prostitute. Hopeful, Asta awaits Ingrida’s rescue, but only to discover that her best friend has betrayed her.
With nowhere to run and nowhere to hide, confronted with herself and the unwritten rules of the street, hidden behind fake smiles and promises of sunshine, Asta draws her last chance of a miraculous escape! – Escaping Sunshine!
Escaping Sunshine is inspired by a true story that took place in Copenhagen in June 2011.
