Synopsis

A man follows a woman in his car. When she crosses the street, he runs her over: she is dead on impact.
Ton and Els live in a newly build town in Holland. They have worked hard to create a happy life. When Els gets pregnant, this feels as the crown on their happiness. The child is born, and is so perfect that they are unable to find a name to match it. But when shortly after the child, a girl, dies of an uncommon disease, the dream they lived is shattered: Ton is devastated. Els is stronger and able to help him. At first Ton seems to get over his loss, but in fact begins to see Els’  strength  as  a  betrayal  of  their   sorrow.  When  she  wants  to  have  a  new  baby  to  heal  their  pain,  Ton  isn’t   ready yet, and when Els talks him into having sex, he feels raped. Els gets pregnant. To her this means a new start. She is happy again, and step by step the dead child begins to fade, up to the point where she denies she ever had one. Her happiness is alien to Ton, who starts to feel rejected and alone. He sees Els as the cause of that. He is unable to stop these feelings, and finally sees only one way out: he has to kill her.
