A visiting photographer from the city visits a backwater village, and in a series of photos, tells the story of the villagers. In a family photo, Chnchik stands at arm’s length from her parents. Her physical handicaps, combined with her keen intuitive senses, all contributed to her estrangement from her family. The 24-year-old girl, lame and hunchbacked, is teased by the villagers and excluded from any activities. They all call her “Chnchik”, meaning something puny and insignificant. Chnchik shepherds goats in the mountains far from the village. There she meets a soldier. He captures the girl’s heart with his human compassion. She feels her first love with the soldier, giving him all of her passion and devotion. After a short fling, a helicopter takes the soldier away to an unknown destination. It’s wintertime, and the all-knowing Village Healer is the first to discover Chnchik’s pregnancy. The Healer and Maret, Chnchik’s mother, attempt in vain to induce an abortion. The next morning at the break of dawn Chnchik escapes to the mountains. Days later, the villagers find her and force the exhausted girl back to the village. The black stain marked on Chnchik’s gate demands a resolution of the situation. Chnchik’s mortified mother confines herself to a room, saying she’ll leave come out. Chcnik’s father Mesrop executes the death sentence with a few blows of the same pick that he used to kill a cow. It seems nothing ever happens in this sleepy village. However, Naro Elder meticulously records the village chronology in his chronicle: “Spring, 1996. There are no blossoms in the village...”
