Synopsis

AKIHIRO MIWA was one of Japan’s most beloved celebrities of the 60’s and the 70’s when the country’s Studio System began its decline.
His films and songs fire the imagination; he is the last vestige of those glamorous days. On top of that, MIWA-SAN was a man posing as a woman, and his audience knew it. From his hit Meke Meke to his work with HAYAO MIYAZAKI, this documentary will look back at one’s of Japan’s pop culture idols.
MIWA-SAN’s renown cut across all of post-war Japan: he appeared in film, music, television, theater and literature. MIWA-SAN: A JAPANESE ICON will tell the story of a country in the midst of revolutionary change through the eyes of this singular, one-of-a-kind artist.
Using a combination of archival footage, MIWA-SAN’s own first-hand accounts, and his films and songs, the documentary will try to capture this particular perfume of the 60’s and 70’s in Japan. It will chronicle a fertile period of change, but also a tumult, through the incisive, offbeat views of a Japanese original who has borne witness to half-century of Japanese history.
