Synopsis

Florianópolis, 2016, an urban cassava production crosses the highway asphalt and reaches a flour mill. On the southern coast of the state, communities use land collectively to produce food for material and symbolic purposes. What keeps such practices alive? The documentary Cultura de Engenho: Patrimônio e Resistência portrays the patrimonial condition of the Santa Catarina Cassava Flour Mills through its illustrious protagonists. These include farmers, artisans, cooks, eaters who, in their statements, intermingle cultural identity with taste and livelihood. From the cassava crops to the flavors of the flour, we taste life and resistance stories and real-world examples of conservation that place the acts of eating and producing food as very current political and cultural attitudes.
