Synopsis
Marek, a young charismatic man, leaves the city and moves to a lonely old house near a village, where he had lived as a child. Marek's idyllic ideas of the future are augmented by an unexpected relationship with a local girl and his return to his passion – painting. Eventually, the gloomy atmosphere of the border region and its queer inhabitants begins to weigh heavily upon him. He finds out that atrocities linked to secret rituals had taken place here over the ages, as well as murders of Nazis in the end of the war. Autumn is coming and light is waning …
Marek reveals forgotten secret places in the house, which revive disturbing childhood memories and force him to recall frightening moments, related to strange rituals that he practiced with his sister Tereza. A drastic event, which deprived Marek of his parents, is turning into a nightmare. He feels there is a link between the past tragedy and the present strange events that are gaining awesome momentum. He reveals his anxieties in letters to his sister who has spent many years at a psychiatric clinic.
Unanswered questions are piling like a silent barrow: What was the black stone in a hidden cellar room, on which human sacrifices were made? Why did little Tereza say that they have awakened the Darkness and that it is angry at them?
Light is waning around Marek. Despair mirrors itself in both Marek's paintings and in his personal life. He closes himself in his inner world, where dreams, awesome memories, and present eerie events blend into a single vortex that is pulling him to the bottom. He believes in the supernatural power of personified darkness that is slowly embracing him. The sun has not risen for many days. A mysterious tune of children singing sounds from an old radio over and over again.
Marek's insane sister reappears in the story. Tension is growing and the story whirls towards a dramatic conclusion. In the end, which, apart from thrill and fear, does not lack cruel love, doubt remains of its rational explanation. Did the events take place in the real world, or in the mind of a mentally disturbed man? Or was there something more? Something that is connected with both the ancient and the recent past of the place forgotten by God? Such doubt appears and grows with every twilight. Then, a horrible revelation comes….
