True story. Talented artist Han van Meegeren is a rebel in de 1920's Dutch art scene because his work is in the style of the Old Masters like Vermeer. When he falls madly in love with the wife of Holland's most important critic, he makes a powerful enemy who destroys his career. To take revenge, he fools the art world and humiliates his enemy by producing a fake Vermeer. However, he chooses to keep quiet and win the hearth of Jolanka. Soon he is making a fortune from his forgeries, but when nazi Hermann Göring is looking for a Vermeer for his own collection, Han finds himself caught in a web of betrayal and deceit that could cost him his life.
