In 1953 the Trujillo dictatorship was in one of its most extreme periods and the international press began to echo the regime's atrocities. After a group of mental patients escaped from the Asylum of Nigua and infiltrated a party of Ramfis Trujillo, the son of the dictator, DR. ANTONIO ZAGLUL (33), a humanist psychiatrist recently arrived from Spain, is appointed new director of the place in order to calm the avalanche of negative press that the lack of control of the place was generating. The illusions that this would be a great opportunity for his career crumble when he arrives there and meet the archaic methods used by the staff and with a staff in deplorable conditions. Very soon, Dr. Zaglul realizes that not only are there mental patients there, but also dissidents and outcasts who will question his passivity in the face of the cruelties of the dictatorship. With the help of Father Wheaton, the parish priest of the town, and even some patients like the mysterious and depressive AURORA and the schizophrenic VENEZUELAN, Dr. Zaglul will manage to improve the conditions of the place and will do everything possible to protect his madmen.
