Synopsis

Aline was born deaf. A young biologist and researcher, she is fascinated by the life seen through the lenses of the powerful microscope of the Laboratory where she works. She lives in an apartment in the center of São Paulo with Rafael, her mentor and head of research at the Laboratory, with whom she is in love. The contact with her next door neighbor, quickly changes her routine. Zilá, the neighbor, is an extremely talented musician in the process of composing her masterpiece, and is going through a critical phase in her life and relationship with her younger boyfriend, Julio.

Music takes up captive space in Aline's life. Though she does not listen conventionally like most people, the melody and Zilá's feeling expressed by her musical instrument are experienced by Aline in an extra sensorial way. In turn, Zilá soon clings to her new neighbor, initially unaware that she is deaf. At times, when she finds herself alone with Aline in the elevator of their apartment building, Zilá exposes herself as she seldom chooses, or has an opportunity, to do. Even if Aline misses most of the words, she "secretly" listens to Zilá's music while the musician listens, through the thin wall separating their apartments, to the neighboring couple having sex.

One life mirrors the other, in an infinite reflection with no end in sight: both are haunted by personal tragedies. Aline is impregnated by the memory of Rafael’s death in the laboratory. Zilá is literally impregnated by Julio, who wants her but no children. Aline falls into a deep depression and her father Jonas rejoins her. Disheartened by her daughter's deafness, the two will have to rebuild their relationship from scratch. All the while Zilá plows through her pain with the force of her cello, but slowly enters Aline’s life as a means to reconnect with herself and her future – should she keep the baby?

Zilá and Aline get closer, in a unique, profound way. The musician will learn from the biologist how to open up to the other; and Aline will find, in Zilá's music, the chance to embark on a healing process. Together, the two women will craft new meanings to their lives and loves.
