1938: Fascism is mounting in Europe. Hersh Goldstein, a young Jewish violin virtuoso, flees his native Romania for Montreal. There, he adopts a false identity as a French Canadian and becomes part of a Québecois traditional music band, trying desperately to save his left family from persecutions.

1938: In the face of mounting fascism, Hersh Goldstein, a young, Jewish, violin virtuoso, flees his native Romania. Arriving in Montreal he barely survives working as a grocery delivery boy. As the war in Europe becomes more imminent Hersh fears for his parents, already suffering terrible persecution in Romania. Desperate to earn money to bring them over he adopts a false identity as a Québecois, adopts the name Pierrot LaFortune, and becomes part of a Québecois music band, playing the jigs, reels and traditional music of Québec. Traveling the rural roads of Québec, he forges a reputation as a great fiddler, a true exponent of Québec culture. All the while he lives with the fear that his double identity will be exposed. Because anti-Semitism and fascism are also very much establishing themselves on this side of the Atlantic…
