Daniil Is a successful Estonian painter. His dark secret is his passion for icons in the tradition of the Orthodox Church. He stalks a young man, kills him and masks the murder as a suicide. In Daniil’s mind, he can “create” new saints by painting icons of his victims. But they can only become saints, if they die. Andrei is a policeman with Tallinn police. His family has been struck by tragedy, because his daughter, the young art student Kristiina, has been raped. Since then she has been in a clinic, unable to speak. Andrei is puzzled by a surge of suicides in Tallinn, his instincts tell him that not all is what it seems. Daniil and Kristiina meet when Daniil is commissioned to paint a mural in the clinic. He is fascinated by the young and gifted artist, who cannot speak in the beginning of their relationship. He brings her along, when he helps a desperate old woman and her multi handicapped son to commit suicide. Daniil lies to Kristiina and tells her, that he only helps people that want to die. Kristiina is shocked and fascinated at the same time. When she finds out that the rape has resulted in a pregnancy, Daniil encourages her to sacrifice the unborn child to become a true artist.Meanwhile Kristiina’s father Andrei is discovering more and more clues that point to a serial killer, who disguises his evil deeds as suicides. Daniil continues to kill to create new icons. When Andrei finally confronts Daniil, Kristiina is with Daniil and he has started to paint an icon of her, obviously intending her to be his next victim. Daniil uses the young woman to bargain with Andrei for his escape. The frustrated Andrei must let Daniil go to save his daughter. Under a false name Daniil joins a religious order and continues to paint his very special icons.
