Two Spanish soldiers, Cosme and Blas, live on the island of Gorriti just off the coast of Uruguay in 1806. They are not only brothers, but also best friends. There are rumors of a British attack to the area, so their post is often inspected by the captain of the nearby fort of Maldonado, who travels accompanied by his beautiful young daughter Manuela. But Manuela has a mean streak, and enjoys watching soldiers being flogged. And when it comes to planning the defense against the British, she does not hesitate to suggest to her father that the island should be sacrificed in a futile resistance to allow the rest of the Spanish forces to escape. Cosme and Blas become aware of Manuela’s cold blooded plans, but Cosme cannot resist her physical charms, and begins a torrid sexual relationship with her. The island is a place of political exile, and one day Cosme and Blas meet young Abel, a boy turning into a man who is left an orphan when his mother dies on the journey to the island. The brothers raise Abel as one of their own. While Cosme enjoys his relationship with Manuela, he observes that she becomes increasingly interested in Blas. And the growing rivalry between the brothers for Manuela’s sexual favors is destroying their friendship. An exploration of the coast to discover the position of the British fleet affords Manuela the opportunity to definitively remain with Blas, much to Cosme’s bitter resentment. And Abel comes of age when he has to kill a man in self-defense. When the expedition returns to Maldonado, Manuela keeps Blas with her while Cosme and Abel return to Gorriti to fight the British. But at the last minute, Blas chooses to stand with his brother and share his fate. And Abel becomes the protagonist of the violent and unexpected end.
