Miriam returns to South Africa when her estranged mother is brutally attacked at her home in suburban Johannesburg. While she tries to confront her crumbling relationship with her mother she also discovers that post apartheid South Africa is grappling with a legal system fractured yet still dominated by an entrenched Afrikaans patriarchal society.
