Malin is a pregnant primary school teacher. Her boyfriend Frank breaks up with her when she’s eight months pregnant and asks her to move out. Malin decides that he’s never going to see the baby when it comes. As a last resort, she seeks out her father whom she’s never met to see if she can stay with him.
Martin is an arrogant, self-centered actor at a big playhouse. He doesn’t even recognize his own daughter when she comes to see him.
Before Malin gets a chance to tell him who she is, Martin suffers a stroke. He wakes up with his autobiographical memory wiped clean.
Malin is his only next of kin. She is forced to take care of Martin, who presupposes that she must have grown up with him. But Malin has too much of a heart to tell him what an awful father he actually was.
Since Martin is like a blank slate, Malin sees an opportunity to change her father’s personality. She teaches Martin everything worth knowing about life, thereby becoming like a mother to her own father. Hilarious situations ensue. Together they gradually fabricate a happy childhood.
But when Martin’s memory starts to return, a conflict arises between his new idyllic, but made-up, life – and his old one that is filled with betrayal.
When Martin decides to return to his old life, Malin breaks off their relationship. She gives birth to her child on her own, and comes to terms with her own fatherless childhood. But in order not to repeat her experience growing up, Malin establishes a functioning relationship with Frank - the father of her newborn baby.
When Malin visits Martin so he can see his grandchild, he is struck by the painful realization of just how badly he let her down. He leaves his self-centered life as an actor and reconciliation follows.
