During these five hundred years of Brazilian history, clerks, police officers, judges, priests, and publir order accountants left few records on Brazilian women, or about foreigners who came to Brazil to build their new lives. One of these women was Maria Josefine Matilde Durocher, or Madame Durocher, as was called by the Brazilians. The story is made of human experiences. The worldview of a person, whether man or woman, always reflects the time, place and society in which he lived. Although Mme Durocher does not represent the average of the women of her time, she is part of the collectivity in her own way, making it possible, even by hand, to know the values and feelings of her time.
