Agata, a Jewish actress and prisoner in a concentration camp, is forced to march from Birnbäumel to Auschwitz. In the middle of the journey, she and her friend Olga escape and take refuge with the local people. Both women begin a journey towards liberated Slovakia.

Towards the end of 1944, the Nazis send Agata along with several hundred other women and girls from Auschwitz to the work camp in Birnbäumel, to dig trenches to stop Russian tanks. In January 1945 their captors realize that these measures are futile, and the camp is abandoned.They are sent on a death march back to Auschwitz. Agata find an old notebook and a pencil and she just start writing this diary to her boyfriend Sasha. Five days into the march Agata and her friend Olga slip away into the forest, and replacing their striped uniforms with ordinary clothes found in abandoned homes, make their way to newly-liberated Slovakia.
