The ARK Project is set into motion to safeguard the happiness of the Japanese people through the peaceful use of robots. However, in the process, a fierce disagreement erupts between chief researcher Dr. Komyoji, who wants to give the robots a “conscience circuit” - an equivalent to the human soul - and his research colleague Gilbert Kanzaki, who is totally against it. Suddenly, Dr. Komyoji is killed in a suspicious accident. Before long, his son Masaru comes under attack from a mysterious team of commandos who want to retrieve research data concealed by the doctor within his body. The hunted Masaru and his older sister Mitsuko gain the protection of Jiro, an android built by Dr. Komyoji. Eventually, Mitsuko and Jiro overcome the barriers between human and android and privately become emotionally attached to one another, but their future is threatened by a new foe who is determined to destroy Jiro/Kikaider... The dark warrior, Hakaider!
