Ingrid Jonker finds from an early age her freedom and solace in writing, whenever and wherever she can. She is like a whirlwind. You have to love her, bringing excitement and drama with her. Jack Cope and Andre Brink love her at the same time - but neither can give Ingrid what she seeks. Rejected by her father, who worked as minister of censorship in the Apartheid regime of 1960s South Africa, she struggles to find a home and a love. It is not until Nelson Mandela read her poem “The child that died at Nyanga” in his first speech to the South African Parliament that she “lived again”.
