Raptusiewcz, residing in one half of a castle with the other half inhabited by the hated notary, Milczek, wants to marry the widowed Podstolina. Perfectly aware that he is lacking in looks and savoir-faire, Raptusiewicz asks Papkin, who had come to his aid, to arrange the marriage. Papkin, who acts like a hero and lady-killer, is actually a coward and escapist.
