There was a time in Canadian history when children were a commodity. For some fifty years around the turn of the century, young orphan boys and girls in Britain were torn from their siblings and friends then shipped to Canada. Enslaved on farms and only given freedom at age 16, many lost their entire childhood to a working life and ill-treatment. It is a part of Canada's past that has been kept far too quiet and for too long. They are called “Home Children” and their stories are often tragic. Many spent their lives searching and hoping to find a sense of family, belonging, and love. This is the story of one such child... Mary Janeway.
