The US Marines are in military control of the Hispaniola island, overcoming a feeble resistance from ill fitted groups of armed bandits, intermixed with real patriots. A tidal wave smashed the mighty USS MEMPHIS against the reefs, and many sailors succumb to the forces of nature. A dominican diver enters the ship and tries to save the Chief Machinist, trapped and badly injured. The Marine gives the diver his dog tags with a plead to give them to his wife with all his love. The diver puts on the identification tags and is hitted hard on the head and neck by the floating debris. The man is rescued unconscious and with total memory and voice loss. The US Navy commander mistakingly assume the diver is one of the survivors and sent him to a psychiatric recovery center. The Chief Machinist wife do not recognize him, and is faced with a disjunctive, keep playing the game or loose a new man in her life. The diver is filled with contradictions in his mind, flashes of his past life start to hint that he is not who others claim him to be, and only a travel back to the island serves as a catalyst to rediscover himself.
