When My life Was My life is a dark humorous look at the story of the "exchange cartel”, an organization based in the triple border between Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay that hides fugitives in homes in the Brazilian countryside. Griselda, the bad-ass lady who is its leader, casually explains how it works: poor families "exchange" relatives in a vegetative state (who get killed) for fugitives facing death threats. In return for hiding them, they receive a sum of money. By Griselda’s eyes, we get to know some of her clients’ stories, like Miguel Carrilo-Leyva’s, a very well known local kingpin who needs desperately to vanish. The step-by-step process of changing, from a drug dealer with a luxurious lifestyle to a ghost who almost never leaves the house, living in the place of a vegetative grandfather, in a small home hidden from the world - and all the dramas he experiences, such as the tricky art of being invisible in a town where everyone is concerned about everyone’s life. His strong personality has unexpected effects on that setting and on the family, creating conflicts that spice up their behaviors and relationships: with the sketchy wife who gives herself excuses for her choice on the death of her own father as if it was something "better for him, who was already suffering”, the lethargic husband who is more concerned about hiding his affair with another man, and the couple's 10-year-old son, who becomes closer and closer to Miguel as time goes by.
