A North Korean spy enters South Korea, intending to shoot a propaganda documentary to show the harsh lives of citizens south of the border and bring it back to his homeland. Rather than show off the lives of those in affluent parts of Seoul, the man opts to film the lives of four downtrodden youths in a decrepit, forgotten corner of the country. These young high school dropouts are each beset with personal hardships and must endure daily struggles within their dysfunctional families.Buk-seong tries his best keep his family afloat, by caring for his mentally handicapped brother and picking up used soju bottles on the street to scrape enough pennies together to keep his drunken, abusive father in booze, cigarettes and occasional pig trotters. Young-rim’s mother also sifts through trash to make some change to feed and clothe him. Embarrassed by her eager willingness to debase herself for him, he lashes out at her and begs her to stop dumpster diving. Woo-suk takes on a number of odd jobs to support his family. As he expectantly awaits his older brother to return from military service and help dig them out of their mire, he seems more optimistic than his friends. Meanwhile, their friend Han-soo is subjected to the fanatical beliefs of her evangelical mother, who willingly offers her daughter as a sexual slave to their local pastor. The foreign spy befriends these youths, recording their daily struggles and quizzing them on their hopeless circumstances. Recognizing their vulnerability, the man suggests a plan to them, which, if they accept, will irrevocably change their lives.
