Synopsis

FAMELUS

A television debate analyzes the only film made by British filmmaker Nicholas Famelus. Listening to the commentators, we discover that the characters in the film really existed. They are a Swedish scientist, an Austrian philosopher and the filmmaker himself. We learn from the debate and from fragments of the work that the three men met in Vienna, where they fell in love with the same woman: the enigmatic Amelia Haftemberger. The commentators question how much of the story told in Famelus’ film is actually true. The debate will be interrupted when two commentators, a man and a woman who were romantically involved in the past, enter into a heated argument.

AKERMANN

A documentary portrays the life of Swedish scientist Aakon Akermann. Offering photographs, super 8 footage, scenes from a television series made about him, and interviews with his friends Nicholas Famelus and Andreas Watermann, the documentary focuses on the scientist’s experiments on animals, which change course when he meets Amelia Haftemberger at a dancing school. One night he gathers his courage and invites her to his house for dinner. The next day, Akermann is admitted to a psychiatric hospital for the rest of his life.

WATERMANN

Vienna in the fifties. While trying to find out what happened at that dinner, Austrian philosopher Andreas Watermann meets Amelia Haftemberger, falls in love with her and they end up getting married. Soon we discover that what we are seeing is the final part of the Famelus film that was being discussed during the debate. We witness the gradual deterioration of the Watermann marriage, Amelia’s death and her widower’s progressive decline into insanity, which eventually lands him in the same psychiatric hospital as his friend Aakon.

Through this cross of fiction, documentary and television debate spanning across part of Europe's 20th century, we try to understand these unpredictable characters. Three intellectuals in love with the same woman who end up jumping off the cliff into the abyss of insanity.
