Synopsis
Summer. A middle-aged music teacher (whom we shall call “A”) falls in love with a young female violoncellist (“B”). Though she has not been admitted to the Conservatory, he offers to give her private lessons, to properly prepare her for the fulfilment of her dream by the time the next year’s exams come round. In the course of those lessons, teacher and pupil get close to each other. For him, simply being at her side, even for a fleeting moment, is a miracle.
Autumn. “B”, the young violoncellist, meets a middle-aged doctor (“C”), and falls madly in love with him. But he has a family, and says he cannot have a relationship with her. He can only offer friendship. But what she feels for him is so strong she decides to accept a platonic relationship, which proves to be a source of constant frustration.
Winter. “C” lives alone. He’s never been married and
doesn’t have a family. His life is an on-going lie. He’s in
love with “D”, his neighbour, a successful violoncellist to
whom he’s never said a word. Every night, he hears her
arguing with her husband. One night, by chance, the two get to meet. She’s on the verge of separation and for a few days seems to be after the emotional support of this new friend.
Spring. “D” has always been in love with her old music
teacher, “A”. Thus closes the circle of love and misencounter. Since then she’s been in a hypocritical marriage to a man she’s never loved. With the advent of summer, “B” once again turns up for Conservatory auditions. This time she does a perfect test but refuses when she is accepted. In the meantime, “C” has
decided to finally confess to his neighbour “D” that he
loves her...
