The rural saltmarshes of Lincolnshire in England, 1555. Set when the Egyptian act comes into effect which forbade any more Gypsies from entering and gave those already in England sixteen days' notice to depart from the realm. Anybody caught aiding Egyptians would be punished by execution. An isolated group of salt farmers arrange illegal passage to Europe for an Egyptian family in hiding. Patience, a mute English girl from the isolated family meets Rumi, the son of the Egyptians. The excitement of a tantalizing new experience with Rumi tempts Patience into exploring her sexual urges. However, in doing so she's rebelling against the command of her controlling brother-in-law David, who is also the leader of their closed community. The viscous hold of David smothers Patience to a point of unsettling brutality as their family is pushed to the brink of destruction.
