Her high maintenance city-girl petulance having caused his fall whilst hiking. The light of a lone farm house offers them salvation from the blizzard. Doug (43), begrudgingly gives them refuge in his desolate home. But his aversion is soon replaced with fascination as he starts to believe Janey to be his dead wife, Anna, come back to him. Searching for a means to cross the frozen landscape Janey discovers Doug’s dark secret in the barn: Doug doesn’t live alone in the farm house; a beleaguered captive is his sole companion and focus of Doug’s malice. Snowed in, and with Stuart’s condition worsening, Janey is dependant on Doug but terrified of what he will do if he knows of her discovery. The strange shrine like quality of the house, Doug’s ‘work’ in the barn and his growing obsession with Janey convinces her they must leave now or become ‘permanent entertainment’ for their twisted host. But when Doug saves Stuart’s life Janey is forced to question Doug’s evil nature and begins to uncover the truth. The captive is a Bosniak army captain, Serge Vorisin, who brutally murdered Doug’s wife and child when Doug ran a mission in Serbia. Turning his back on God and civilisation, Doug’s sole purpose in life is to make Serge suffer for his crimes. When Doug finds out Janey has discovered Serge, the remnants of the man-of-god conflict with instrument of vengeance he has become: can she be made to understand? Can she be trusted to keep the secret? If this is Anna she must understand, but what is she doing here with Stuart? Nothing must stop his only remaining mission in life – Serge’s pain; they should have died in the storm anyway. If Janey and Stuart are to avoid sharing Serge’s fate she must go to the heart of who she is, take control of her life and fight, even if it means drawing on the darkest elements of her nature, finding the reserves she never knew she had. One thing is for sure, not everyone will leave the valley alive.
