On the 1st February 1908, upon his return from a long stay in Vila Viçosa, King Carlos and Crown Prince Luís Filipe are murdered in Terreiro do Paço central plaza of Lisbon. Anarchists associated with the Carbonari, Alfredo Costa, Manuel Buiça, among others, practically eliminate the Portuguese monarchy in a single coup. The extreme violence of this act leaves the Portuguese society discontent and the tension between the Monarchists and the Republicans reaches its climax. The film portrays the daily life of King Carlos, Manuel Buiça and companions during the period before the coup of the Regicide.
