Synopsis

Samuel Thompson is a young North American missionary who arrives in Chile to live in a poor neighborhood of Santiago in order to pursue his evangelizing mission. The film takes place in the 1980´s during Pinochet´s brutal military dictatorship. Samuel is motivated by the idea of living in a third world country, delivering God´s message and helping their progress. He will then be able to return to his religious community in Milwaukee and explain his life experience with photographs, film and personal testimony.
His church sends him to live as a boarder in Gladys´s house. She is a thirty two year old attractive and brave woman who lives in a slum with her mother (67 years old), a daughter (4 years old) and Vladi (8 years old). Vladi becomes his best friend. He is one of many children abandoned by families destroyed by persecution, torture and death during the dictatorship.
Samuel becomes a participant in the history and struggles of the
slum. This experience produces a profound transformation in his life. He becomes romantically and passionately involved with Gladys. With her he is able to see a life of love, struggle, solidarity and treason that occurred in the slums of Chile. The film depicts their encounter, the misery and greatness of people in this slum active in the struggle to return to democracy in Pinochet´s Chile.
The story is narrated by Samuel, a young American preacher whose life is transformed while living with these women and their kids. An exceptional testimony, a tribute to all women such as Gladys, who kept freedom alive. Samuel lives the stifling atmosphere of the times and is also a victim. He is witness and actor of a society that is in rebellion, beginning to organize to recover freedom and democracy
