Roughly 96% of countries now permit a woman to terminate a pregnancy when there is a threat to maternal life. Since 1973, women in the USA have had the write to seek abortion on request and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that in recent years 1 in 6 pregnancies ends in termination having peaked in the mid 80's at 1 in 4. The combined number of reported abortions in the USA since 1973 exceeds 50 million. That's more that the entire population of most countries including Colombia, Spain, and Argentina and gives the USA a higher rate of reported abortions than the countries of Northern Africa. Despite these high numbers it is still a largely taboo subject and one that has remained a political and social hot topic. The act of abortion is met with cries of murder, the expectation of guilt, and an ongoing battle over women's rights to choose.But what are the driving forces behind these high rates of abortion, what is the emotional impact of such a decision to those involved, and what is being done to address these issues?Aborted and Distorted will look beyond the numbers and offer insight into the personal side of this sensitive subject.The film is being made by British filmmaker Tom Fox Davies. His previous documentary projects include Circular Cellular and E-Life.
