Fifth grader Satoshi's parents run the Akatsukikan inn in a small hot spring resort town. The fast-maturing girls in Satoshi's class frighten him, and he looks down on the immature boys. He feels uncomfortable with his own body, which changes against his will. He spots his father with another
woman, making him despise adults even more.

On his way home from school, Satoshi is suddenly asked "Are you a child?" by Kozue, a beautiful young girl he's never met before, and turns red with embarrassment. When she points this out to him, he runs home.

The next day, Kozue joins Satoshi's class. His classmates are excited, having never seen such a beauty in their town before. Hearing that her mother is working at Satoshi's inn, they are envious and tease him. Satoshi is embarrassed and gives Kozue the cold shoulder, but that doesn't bother Kozue at all.

Kozue follows Satoshi everywhere he goes. Everything fascinates her, and she likes nothing better than gathering up fallen leaves, then scattering them in the air. Bewildered by Kozue at first, Satoshi gradually becomes charmed by her purity and innocence. Then she reveals a big secret to him.
