Young Ziad is the star of Jalazon Refugee Camp basketball team in Palestine. When his best friend is shot dead by Israeli forces, Ziad and his team attempt to assassinate an Israeli settler. Ziad is captured, then released fifteen years later. MAFAK (Screwdriver), a haunting psychological thriller, follows a hallucinating Ziad, as he struggles to adjust to his chaotic new world. Ziad’s mental disorder halts his advances with both love interests: Salma, a girl from the camp, and, Mina, a Palestinian-American shooting a documentary about Ziad, who’s interviews chip away at his psyche. Ziad explodes when soldiers imprison a young basketball player. He attempts suicide by soldier, but fails as people plead for his life: “he’s a madman!” In the dead of night, Ziad, dressed like a settler hitchhikes a ride with an Israeli. After a long conversation, Ziad stabs him with a screwdriver. He drives the body towards the Israeli checkpoint.
