Synopsis
As Niyor and his sister, Kuwoli arrive with their parents at a remote town in Assam in the North East of India, it is the beginning of a new and exciting adventure for them , promising endless possibilities. Niyor makes many new friends and of course a new best friend; Pulak.
Their innocent lives fully pre occupied with games and amazing discoveries shield them from being overly aware , that all around them, the whole of Assam is burning in the wake of the biggest civil unrest the state has ever seen. Riots and killings are almost a daily occurrence. We are talking about Assam of the 1980’s.
One fateful day, the inevitable happens.
Niyor and Kuwoli witness a frenzied mob burning down a settlement before their very eyes. They are utterly traumatized, and plagued by sleepless nights thereafter. Kuwoli, who is younger and more sensitive than her brother, is absolutely devastated, to the point where she stops talking altogether. Her parents have no idea how to help her.
All hope seems lost, till a miracle happens in the form of their maternal grandfather’s arrival. Grandpa, a talented actor and story-teller, is their favourite person in the whole world, and through his delightful stories, he manages to convince the children that what they had witness the other day was in fact part of a film shoot. The children recover, and Kuwoli finally begins to speak again. Normalcy returns to the children’s lives, and it seems as if the worst is over.
That is, until Grandpa has to leave immediately to meet his theatre group somewhere where they are staging a play. Kuwoli, who desperately wanted to see her grandfather in action on stage, is most disappointed.
Niyor saves the day by promising Kuwoli that he and his friends would stage a play for her to compensate. With the air around them thick with news and rumors about riots and deaths, Niyor knows what his play is going to be about. But he has no way of knowing that his play would have consequences that would alter their destinies forever.
This is a story about more than just two children. It is a story about all the children who grow up watching violence, which leaves them with an indelible mark that will haunt them forever.
