Letters from Kuluene is an emotional account on the encounter with indigenous peoples in Brazil, an imaginary exchange of letters between three narrators: the director himself, whose father documented the Brazilian Indians, and two little-known names of Brazilian indigenism: the French anarchist Paul Berthelot, who ventured through the Araguaia River valley in central Brazil in 1905 to investigate whether Brazilian indigenous societies could be considered anarchic, and Buell Quain, an American anthropologist who committed suicide in unexplained circumstances among the Krahô Indians in Maranhao state, in 1939. As they enter the indigenous world and find the natives, these men face possibly the most radical human experience: to find themselves in a place with values ​​absolutely different from their own and where the normal categories used to understand and control the world have no value. Without this control, one must revise expectations and face some of our deepest fears: the fear of the unknown, of our savage, violent, primitive side, the dread of a place where truth and lies do not have the same meanings that led them to there. Narrated in French, English and Portuguese, and mixing dramatic and documentary images, Letters from Kuluene is a lyrical journey that explores the wild heart of Brazil and the human being.
